Sketch book: 1/1/2024-1/15/2024

Here's a whole bunch of stuff because I didn't have time to do a post last week.

Sketch page from a Ballistic Ecks vs Sever viewing

I got a Hobonichi to do some sketching in! This first page I filled out while watching Ballistic Ecks vs. Sever with my partner. It feels weird that this is the lowest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes. It's not amazing, but overall it seems kind of mid. It's actually got some nostalgic early-2000s-ness and some batshit plot points, so I was entertained at least.

Sketch page from a friend's game night

This page I filled out at a friend's house during a game night. They have a bunch of arcade cabinets and geeky memorabilia in their basement, so I had a fun time drawing some of that stuff (and their cat). I like how the Schwarzenegger and Soma Cruz turned out here.

Sketch page of poses while listening to a podcast

This page I filled out while watching podcast/live-show/thing from the Flop House podcast on the Sylvester Stallone movie Over the Top. I pulled up a lot of stock photos and just focused on drawing poses. I didn't initially like how this page turned out, but it's grown on me.

Sketch page of instructional VHS tapes

And this page is from just yesterday, where I hung out with friends and watched the Internet Archive's amazing collection of Instructional VHS tapes.

I try to put at least one thing on the page per day, but they aren't always filled to the brim. if I feel like I'm falling behind or didn't do anything notable, I'll usually just do a little self-portrait like one of these.

I've managed to keep up with at least one drawing per day, but I'm not entirely sure how I feel about drawing in the Hobonichi. I have the A6 sized notebook, which is kind of small. I suppose I could fix that by getting an A5 size in April or June, but the real problem is that there's only one page per day. It makes me feel pressured to "make it count" which isn't something I want from a sketch book.

Sketches from Death Race 2000

That said, I'm still using the old sketchbook when I fill up a Hobonichi page. I drew this when I went to a showing of Death Race 2000, one of my favorite movies. Not actually a huge fan of how this page turned out, but I think I did all right for drawing in a dark movie theater.

Sketches from Slam Poetry

I do really like how this page turned out, though. This was from a local slam poetry reading at a nearby bar that I went to with friends. We ended up passing the notebook around, taking turns doing some doodles. I always love how dense pages like these turn out.

I've also been getting back into watercolors! You can see more of those in the sketches section of the site. I bought some watercolor sketchbooks for MAGFest, so hopefully I'll have a lot more of these for the next post!
