Sketch book: 12/15/2023-12/18/2023

Recently, I’ve been trying to bring a notebook with me to practice sketching from life, and this was a great weekend for that! I started off Friday visiting some friends from out-of-state. It was a two hour drive, so I asked my partner to give me a subject to draw, and they said “Freddie Mercury” (I think Queen was playing on the radio at the time)
My friends have two cats (Thelma and Louise) and some chickens, and I spent a lot of time trying to draw them. Animals are hard to draw because they don’t give a shit about trying to sit still when you're trying to draw them. It's good practice, I guess.
The last time I was there, I accidentally left a notebook behind, and one of my friends drew these really gorgeous textures, so I was inspired to start adding those to my sketches. It was really cool exchanging these notebooks. I left a notebook behind again (intentionally this time) when I took the old one back. Hope we keep this up!
Went to see The Boy and the Heron with my sister for the second time on Sunday (no pictures from that sorry). Still not sure how I feel about it. It has a lot of moments I love in it, but I don’t know if it coheres in a way that really elevates it for me.
On Monday I went to see one of my friends play a live show at a bar with their band, Crushdepth. I was dancing during their set, so I didn’t draw much, but I drew the band after them, Frances and the Boof Machine. They had kind of a noisy, metal sound with some queer juggalo aesthetics. They were a ton of fun. I like this approach of just packing the page with sketches, textures, and random doodles, and I want to keep doing that going forward. Even a sketch can be a work of art!
